“We Will Not Be Afraid” aims to evoke courage and determination to stand up for justice and each other in a menacing world. We Will Not Be Afraid had contributions from my favorite musicians from both Ithaca, NY (Elliot Martin of John Brown's Body & Maddy Walsh of The Blind Spots,) and drums, bass, and horns from Austin, TX bandmates. The recording is a merging of worlds with a message of unity. It is the second single from the upcoming full-length “Dare to Dance” album. Profits from Downloads of the song to benefit the NRDC. It's also available for streaming on all major platforms.

Press Release

For his birthday on January 18th, 2025, Papa Muse released the song "We Will Not Be Afraid," the second single from his upcoming full-length “Dare to Dance” album.

The spirited song is now available worldwide, launching just 2 days before the incoming presidential inauguration. And regardless of where you stand politically, it’s fair to say that we are a divided nation and many people are stressed and concerned about the future. So while Papa Muse wasn't planning on releasing this song as a single, he felt it was an important message to share at this time. Profits earned from downloads of the song from his website www.PapaMuse.com will be donated to the NRDC (the Natural Resources Defense Council,) a non-profit environmental advocacy organization, through the month of February.

Way (Papa Muse) is founder of The Plastic Free Challenge and an environmental advocate. And now with the threat of further deregulation to corporate power, we need organizations like the NRDC to protect the environment more than ever. You can learn more about their mission and accomplishments at their website nrdc.org/about

Papa Muse was inspired to write “We Will Not Be Afraid” after hanging out with Maddy Walsh, a talented Ithaca NY based singer and activist at the Miami Grassroots Festival half a decade ago. He mustered up the courage to ask her if she would consider singing on one of his songs in the future and she graciously said yes!

Within hours Papa Muse was writing a danceable Afro rock groove on his acoustic guitar. The song was very much in the spirit of the Grassroots Festival, which brings people together to celebrate life through music. “We Will Not Be Afraid” aims to evoke courage and determination to stand up for justice and each other in a menacing world.

Living in Austin Texas at that time, Papa Muse recorded the basic tracks with a group of talented Austin musicians listed below, and some years later Maddy Walsh and Elliot Martin (John Brown’s Body) recorded harmony vocal parts to the song for a final delectable icing on the cake. As Papa’s two favorite Ithaca-area singers, he is honored to have their voices added to this song.

Elliot Martin used to provide Way (Papa Muse) with valuable advice about performing. Now retired, he recorded his vocal part privately from his home during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020. Way hadn’t provided him with the lyrics and as it turns out, Elliot’s lyrical interpretation differed from what he had written. Yet they are just as profound and inspiring. It was a happy accident.
